Baking Cakes in Kigali

När jag var på skönhetssalongen sist läste jag det glossiga östafikanska magasinet TRUE LOVE. Det är en bra tidning namnet till trots. De recenserade en bok som heter "Baking Cakes in Kigali" av Gaile Parkin. Jag älskar boknamnet och så här löd recensionen:

Tragedy and humour are inextricably linked in this charming story set in Kigali, Rwanda, where residents and expatriates are still coming to terms with the aftermath of the 1984 genocide. But in one small suburb thay have a fairy godmother in the shape of Angel Tungaraza, a professional cake baker.

Angel has her hands full with her uncommunicative husband and their five orphaned grandchildren, but she always finds the time to get involved in the lives of the people who place orders for her irresistible cakes. She cries and laughs with them, then, with a few well-chosen words, manages to make them do exactly as she wants.

Angel is adorable, and the bit about TRUE LOVE magazine sponsoring the wedding of a Hutu and Tutsi, for me, was the icing on the cake. An easy read that deals gently with tough issues such as Aids, suicide and genital mutilation.



















Jag gick förbi bokaffären i Yaya, men de hade inte fått in den. Jag kom istället hem med en bok som heter "Swahili for the Broken Hearted - Cape Town to Cairo by any means possible" av Peter Moore. Han gör en road trip genom bland annat Zimbabwe och Kenya och jag tror att den är rolig och spännande.
